Today we associate "killer app" with something you would load onto your tablet or phone. I first learned about RSS over 5 years ago and I wouldn't say that it is anymore important in the computing world as it was back then. RSS has existed before the whole "app" craze, but I won’t deny that it has its niche in the computing field.
For most of the tasks that I would have used RSS for I now use Google Alerts, Facebook, or just checking my favorite news websites. Am I missing a few stories here and there? I'm sure, but as Richardson alludes to, I do believe RSS will add to my information overload. I like the principals behind the technology and think it will do wonders with keeping up with blog posts or smaller websites. I don't see it becoming a game changer though.

I just finished reading this chapter and I agree with you that RSS could add to information overload. I do see the advantage of using RSS but it is good to hear the view from someone who has used it. Emily

Antonio - I'm glad you pointed to Google Alerts being another viable option for content delivery. Interesting that you use Facebook to keep up with content delivery since Facebook also streams a lot of wasted time content. I agree RSS feeds is content overload, I'm experiencing it! I think RSS is a good solution for keeping up with blogs, but I also think it's a powerful way to deliver personal content and acts as another communication or marketing tool to some extent.

I like how you are approaching your information gathering through multiple resources. Facebook, Google Alerts, and other resources can be invaluable. I also agree with Erik and his thought that Facebook can have lots of wasted information and too. I suppose it's who you friends, and what they typically post. Good thoughts.

I know you all talk about information overload... but I usually check multiple news and sports sites each day. I love the fact that I can read them all in one place and not have to jump from site to site.
My experience with Google alerts was not a good one - I felt like it always was "reaching" other things that I was not interested in and emailing me too much junk....

@ben - You really have to fine tune your search query until you start to see results that meet your specifications. Much like doing a normal search the same search commands work in Google Alerts. I've always liked "Urban Decay", but I kept receiving results that pertained to the make-up brand. Using the following query narrowed down my results so I only get an occasional email that is highly relevant.
urban decay -naked -beaut* -sell* -sale -swatch* -order -pallette -palette -beauty -waterproof -contest -giveaway -fashion -sephora -eye* -lip* -skin -cosmetic* -urbandecay.com -makeup
